Weekend on the Rock July 5-7, 2013: Art Explosion

Here are Inside Bainbridge recommendations for the weekend of July 5-7, 2013:

1. Take a Nap, Work in the Yard

Where: Any where
Why: Haven’t you had enough of events and activities, what with the Street Dance and the Parade?

2. Dogs/Beach Mapping at the BPA Gallery  
When: Friday, 5-7 p.m.
Where: BPA Gallery, 200 Madison Ave. N.
Why: Check out Susan Arthur’s black and white photographs of found beach objects, specifically at Eagle Harbor, and low-tech images of dogs. One wall showcases photographs from a beach mapping project in which the photographer collected detritus from the beach, logged it, photographed it, re-created the objects in sculpture, and wrote essays about each object. The other wall highlights dogs on the beach.

3. Donna Snow Exhibit Opening Reception
When: Friday, 5-7 p.m.
Where: Bainbridge Public Library, 1270 Madison Ave.
Why: There’s a theme on the Island this month, with Keiko Hara at BAC and the Japanese American National Museum Conference happening from July 4-7 in Seattle. Snow combines traditional Japanese art with other items to make visually stimulating collages.

4. First Fridays Art Walk  PLUS Frogs on the Rock
When: Friday, 6-8 p.m.
Where: Downtown Winslow
Why: If you haven’t had enough of crowds yet, get downtown and hang, looking at art. The Downtown Association’s Frogs on the Rock exhibit launches with giant frogs created by local artists on display.

5. Keiko Hara: Prints from 1981-2013
When: Friday, 6-8 p.m.
Where: BAC Gallery, 151 Winslow Way
Why: Internationally known artist Keiko Hara shows off the highlights of her 40-year career. Enjoy the opening reception. 

6. Madrona House Hard Hat Tours  
When: Saturday, 12-1 p.m.
Where: 8800 Madison Avenue North

7. Gallery Talk: Keiko Hara 
When: Saturday, 12:30 p.m.
Where: BAC Gallery
Why: Hara will discuss her traditional technique + modern sensibility prints.

8. On Assignment: Life as a Foreign Correspondent
When: Saturday, 1-2:30 p.m.
Where: Bainbridge Public Library, 1270 Madison Ave. N.
Why: John Thorne grew up on Bainbridge Island and then spent the last ten years as a foreign correspondent, primarily in North Africa, for the Associated Press, The National, and The Christian Science Monitor. He will recount some of the highlights of his work, which range from covering the Arab Spring in Tunisia and Libya to accompanying the French Foreign Legion as it routed Islamist terrorists in northern Mali last January.

9. First Saturdays with The EDGE Improv
When: Saturday, 7:30 p.m.
Where: BPA, 200 Madison Avenue
Why: Because they’re funny.

Juggling10. First-Sunday Juggling at BPA  
When: Sunday, 7-8:30 p.m.
Where: BPA, 200 Madison Avenue
Why: Want to impress your date? Whip out three flaming torches and toss them around. Come by to learn how to do it. It’s for everyone and it’s free. Bring your own juggling implements or borrow ours.
